People Affected With Diabetes Have An Increased Risk of Contracting Tuberculosis

People with diabetes are seven times more likely to develop tuberculosis than the general population, says a 20-year study. Results revealed people with diabetes suffered from "immune dysregulation" and were more prone to contracting the deadly infection. These findings support the view that screening of patients with diabetes for latent TB should be performed in any setting. Also, researchers have estimated that if diabetes could be reduced by 35 percent globally, 1.5 million TB deaths and 7.8 million infections could be prevented.
